Questions to Ask Your Boyfriend

Whether you're a few months in or a few years deep, these questions will help you learn something new about him.

The trick with these is to ask one and then stop talking. Most people need a few seconds of quiet before they say the real answer, and filling that gap with a follow-up question gets you the polite version instead. Three sections below: his story, how he actually works day to day, and the two of you. Two or three questions in an evening is plenty.

His story

Where he came from and what he made of it. These are the easiest to answer and give you the background that makes the later questions worth asking.

  • 1What was your childhood dream job, and when did that change?
  • 2What is something you've never told anyone about your high school years?
  • 3What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
  • 4What is a lesson from your past that shaped how you love today?
  • 5What is a fear you've overcome that you're proud of?
  • 6What is the most adventurous thing you've ever done?
  • 7Who taught you the most about the kind of man you wanted to be?
  • 8What is something you were certain about at twenty that you laugh at now?
  • 9What is a friendship that changed you?
  • 10What is a job or role that taught you something unexpected?
  • 11What is a risk you took that quietly paid off?
  • 12What is something from your upbringing you want to keep, and something you don't?

How he works

The practical section — how he recharges, what wears him down, where he feels capable. These answers change how you look after each other.

  • 13What is something you're secretly really proud of but rarely talk about?
  • 14When do you feel the most confident and in your element?
  • 15What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to daily habits?
  • 16How do you recharge when you're feeling completely drained?
  • 17What is something you think you're better at than most people?
  • 18What makes you feel most supported when you're dealing with stress?
  • 19What kind of day leaves you most drained, and why?
  • 20What do you do when you are upset that I might be misreading?
  • 21Do you process things better out loud or on your own first?
  • 22What is a compliment that actually lands for you?
  • 23What is something you avoid that you probably shouldn't?
  • 24How do you know when you need a break rather than a push?

Him and us

The relationship questions. Ask these last — they are easier to answer honestly once the conversation has been going a while.

  • 25What was your first impression of me that turned out to be totally wrong?
  • 26What is your favorite memory of us when we're just hanging out doing nothing?
  • 27What is something I do that makes you feel deeply appreciated?
  • 28What is your favorite way to spend quality time with me?
  • 29What is one thing you hope never changes about us?
  • 30What is something you want us to get better at?
  • 31When do you feel closest to me?
  • 32What is something you would like me to ask you about more often?
  • 33What is something about our future you think about more than you say?
  • 34What do I do that makes a hard day easier?
  • 35What is a small thing you would miss if it stopped?
  • 36If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be?

Questions about these questions

How do I ask these without it feeling like an interrogation?
Ask one, answer it yourself, and let the conversation drift. A list worked through in order feels like a form. One question that produces forty minutes of tangent is the list doing its job.
What if he gives short answers?
Wait longer than feels comfortable before speaking again. Short answers are usually the first draft. The second one arrives if nobody fills the gap — and if it doesn't, move on rather than pressing.
Are these only for long-term relationships?
No. The first section works from early on. The third section assumes enough shared history to have opinions about the relationship itself.
