- Why do conversations go deeper in a car?
- You are side by side rather than face to face, so there is no eye contact to manage, and neither of you can leave. Both of those make it easier to say something you have been sitting on.
- Do these work for short drives too?
- The first section does — the memory questions need no run-up. The last section really does need the long quiet stretch, and asking those twenty minutes from home tends to leave things half-finished.
- What if the driver wants to concentrate?
- Keep to the first two sections and drop anything that needs thinking about. A question that makes someone stare into the middle distance is a question for the passenger seat.
